Ensuring safety and compliance of all electrical equipment

PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is an essential health and safety measure for any workplace. It involves testing the safety of portable electrical appliances and ensuring that the wiring of these appliances meet electrical guidelines. This makes sure that users are safe when using them, both in the short-term and over time as they may have sustained damage due to wear and tear or prolonged use.

PAT testing is especially important in areas where a high volume of people are present such as public locations, schools, hospitals, and other work premises. It can help to prevent accidents or harm from potentially hazardous electrical items.

The steps of PAT Testing are as follows:

Visual Inspection – Checking the basic condition of an appliance and its wiring for any signs of damage or wear and tear which could be hazardous if left unchecked.

Earth Bond Test – Testing the insulation between the outer casing and metal parts of the appliance to make sure they are intact and not at risk of electrical shock.

Insulation Resistance Test – To test for any electrical faults or short circuits in the item’s wiring system that could cause harm to the user.

Polarity Check – Verifying that the appliance is wired correctly so that electricity runs in a safe direction and can’t lead to accidental electrocution from reverse polarity switch trips.

Flex and Plug Tests – Checking for any loose wires, frayed cables, or worn plugs which could pose potential hazards if left unchecked.

Functional Test – Ensuring that the appliance is working properly with no sign of damage or short circuits present in its internal wiring system after completing any repairs or replacements necessary from previous tests results.

Load Delay Test – Making sure all internal components can withstand high load currents without performance degradation over time due to wear and tear or prolonged use.
